In Hong Kong
Check out awesome bands like (mine ;) Shotgun Politics, the David Bowie Knives and Poubelle International. And if you are in town you must go to one of Chris B’s Underground shows, or otherwise hang out at the Wanch, Rockschool or Fringe Club. Good fun!
In Beijing
Beijing has a SLEW of great bands, start at Modern Sky, Maybe Mars or Tagteam Records for bands like RETROS, Subs, etc. Go nuts! From a nightlife perspective I don’t even know where to start, but the “classic” joints are (from HUGE to so tiny you can’t find it) Starlive, Yugong Yishan, MAO livehouse, D22, 2 Kolegas, Shenme Bar Forbidden City.

Where else do you need to go? Haha! My final recommendation would be Little Imp Books, a blog with great stories from a China that could have been.
